Danebu Kongsgaard was originally a gift from Norway to Denmark as a token of gratitude for the food support Norway received from Denmark during World War II. On Denmark's Constitution Day in 1945, a large fundraising effort was launched to raise funds to build a ski lodge or "Danskehytte" - the best of Norway - to be presented to the recipient, the Danish Sports Association, as a gesture of thanks for their assistance and solidarity. Contributions poured in quickly from both individuals and businesses, and by August 1945, the gift deed was handed over. They found the most magnificent site on Aurdalsåsen, and an architecture competition was held, won by Espen Poulsson. Construction began in 1947, and the lodge emerged from the ground like a royal estate from the fairy tales, opening its doors on December 16, 1950. Since then, Danebu has meant a lot to many. It has been a place for winter sports and recreation, a place for celebration and camaraderie. Read more about Danebu's history in the digital history book here.
Today, Danebu Kongsgaard is family-owned and has undergone significant upgrades in recent years, with everything from the interior to the guest experience, food, and drinks scrutinized. There has been a focus on preserving the history and soul of the place while meeting today's standards of aesthetics and comfort. And this is just the beginning - the next chapters in the story are still being written, and there will be much excitement in the years to come.
